Mother’s Day is the second Sunday in May in the US – May 10 this year, and the fourth Sunday of Lent in the UK and Ireland, which this year is March 22.
All mothers are special and deserve the best from their offspring on Mother’s Day. Flowers traditionally increase in price just before Mother’s Day, and it’s not as if you can avoid this price hike by shopping early is it? But you can buy an alternative gift.
What do you think your mother would like most of all? She probably would be happy that you simply remembered her on Mothering Sunday, rather than want you to spend a lot of money. Buy her something that will touch her heart.
If you are a husband and have small children, why not help them make something for their mother that she will cherish? Moms love things that their children have made especially for them. And she will probably keep it forever, no matter how insignificant it may seem to others.
You could buy your mother something different that she would never think of, such a magazine subscription or a practical creative course she could go on to learn a new skill (not cooking – that would be an insult!)
You could find an artist to paint her picture or a caricature artist to draw her. That’s a great gift and never fails to impress. Goofy Faces is one such company who will provide this service by email from a good photograph that you upload to their website. They will also incorporate her hobbies and talents into the caricature if you let them know.
Or perhaps she would prefer something feminine or something that would enable her to pamper herself. Whatever you do, don’t buy her a labor saving device for the kitchen – unless she has specifically asked for one! She should not be reminded of chores – and she certainly should not be allowed to work on her special day. Bring her breakfast in bed, and don’t let her lift a finger all day.
Whatever you decide to buy for your mother, make sure it makes her smile!
All the very best
